Within my craft, I would say that one of the skills that I employ the most is problem solving.

When someone comes to me with an idea for a commission, it’s often up to me to use my creative imagination to turn that idea into reality. However, that is not usually a simple task.

A process is required that involves taking into account design, materials and production and this can often be the hardest part of any creation (“the prototype stage”).

One of the difficult things about this stage is that it can be like hitting your head off a brick wall at times with problem after problem. Frustration can play a big part in it, as can disappointment. However, this is an important thing to go through.

As I persist in trying to find solutions, drawing on all of my knowledge, experience and understanding, breakthrough will inevitably come. This will often ignite confidence and motivation In me that will empower me to see things through to completion and ultimately create something unique and beautiful.

The moral of this wee story?

To take the easy option is to deprive yourself of some of life’s most important experiences. Experiences that build character and develop you as an individual. Push yourself to go on and never give up.
