This contemporary designed serving paddle board is made from Willow and shows the contrast between the light sap wood and dark heart wood. The piece of wood used for this board came from a storm damaged tree located in a private garden in Glasgow’s Southside.

The wood was milled at 30mm thick and required dimensioning to 25mm thick. Once dimensioned from the rough cut, it’s left to settle for a few days. I then do the layout for my design and use a western style saw for long rip cuts and a Japanese saws for the angles cuts, this helps with accuracy. A handplane is then used to square up and bevel each edge surface before it’s given a thumbhole. Finally the sanding and finishing process begins.

The board is finished with two coats of food safe coconut oil followed by two coats of Sloyd coconut oil beeswax blend polish
