Curly Beech Board
Curly Beech Board
A multifunctional board that could be used to serve cheese or charcuterie on. It could also be used as a chopping board due to the hard wearing nature of Beech wood.
Made from a piece of beech that was salvaged from a storm damaged tree in Victoria Park, Glasgow in 2016, this board has a simplistic but elegent appearance to it. The character of the wood is what really makes this piece stand out. Different areas of compression in the wood grain cause light to reflect at different angels causing a stunning wave like effect.
Dimensioned from a 55mm rough sawn slab, the board is left for a few days to settle and allow any tension in the to be released. Once dimensioned the functional thumb hole is created using a brace and bit and each edge of the board is rounded over using a handplane. A lot of sanding follows this then the board is finished with two coats of food safe coconut oil followed by two coats of Sloyd coconut oil beeswax blend polish.
